Frequently asked questions

It’s okay to have questions.

Is this only for people with childhood trauma?

That is the heart of Dr. Winsten’s practice, but the problems it causes — anxiety, depression, loneliness, relationship trouble, work difficulties — are welcome here in their own right. Most people who seek therapy have some history of childhood mistreatment, whether or not they name it that way at first.

How long does this kind of therapy take?

There is no quick fix for deep-rooted problems, and honest therapy doesn’t promise one. The work is done slowly, with care and compassion — the length depends on what you bring and what you want to change, and it is something you and Dr. Winsten will talk about openly as you go.

Can we meet online?

Yes — sessions are available in person at the El Cerrito office and online. Many clients combine the two as their schedules require.

What about fees and insurance?

Please call to discuss — Dr. Winsten will confirm fees and current arrangements directly with you.

What happens when I call?

You’ll have a brief first conversation about what brings you in and whether this work is the right fit. If it is, you’ll schedule a first session. Reaching out can feel intimidating — that is understood here, and there is no obligation to continue.

What if I’m not sure my childhood “counts”?

Neglect and misattunement don’t always look dramatic from the outside. If you recognize yourself in the patterns described on this page, that is reason enough to call — sorting out what happened, and what it did, is the work itself.
